As child safety is essential, each year my department and I coordinate in collaboration with Montgomery County Child Protective Services a child abuse training for staff. Social Workers review the signs of child abuse and the reporting process to empower staff to make the right call in prioritizing safety

Social-Emotional Learning is at the center of teaching. However, the approaches differ between France and the United States. To help new teachers adjust, I explained the role of the school counselor and how I can support them. I also presented and summarized the major SEL projects that we do each year, the reasoning behind them, and where to find pre-compiled resources to help with implementation

This presentation was developed in response to the multiple violent crises that occurred around the world during the 2020-2021 school year. Our department presented teachers with strategies of how to create a safe classroom space for difficult discussions and how to approach violent topics in a safe, appropriate manner.

This event was designed to share with families and community members the role of the school counselor, which was a newer position at the school at that time. We shared how school counselors support students, how to contact us, the importance of confidentiality, what to do in case of crisis, and common myths about the profession. We also used this time to host a guest speaker to present 
"How to best support children in challenging times".

BACK TO SCHOOL WEEK TEACHER TRAINING

As part of the "pre-rentree" (back-to-school) week, I presented daily trainings for teachers in collaboration with the secondary-level school counselor. Topics included the role of the school counselor, SEL resources, RULER by Yale, student connectedness projects, and teacher self-care.

February 3 - 7, 2020

To promote the role of the counselor, I created data sheets in both French and English to advocate for the scope of the counseling department within the school since the start of the academic year. I also provided information about the role of the school counselor. These were displayed both on a bulletin board and as handouts for staff members.

TEACHER WELL-BEING : A MOMENT OF SELF-CARE

This event was held to support teachers and give them a space to relax and learn self-care techniques. We provided a make-your-own hot chocolate bar to entice teacher attendance. During the event, we discussed current ways each person practiced self-care and taught them how to lead and practice mindfulness, deep breathing, and body scans.

4TH GRADE LEADERSHIP ASSEMBLY

In collaboration with the 4th grade teachers, this assembly was the result of project-based learning to empower students to become school leaders and follow the school rules. Each class presented on different school rules in the forms of poems, videos, and skits.

POSITIVE D.A.Y. CADET INAUGURATION PROGRAM

I designed this brochure to recognize the efforts of the students who participated in the Positive D.A.Y. Cadet Program. William Wirt Middle School premiered the cadet program, and this event recognized this through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to bring the program to other schools in the county.

William J. Makell, Jr. spoke at the February College and Career Breakfast that I organized. Here, he is pictured speaking to students from two AVID classes and an Arts class. About 40 students were in attendance and were fascinated by his message of perseverance, hard work, and taking smart risks to be successful. Students self-rated their knowledge of the Coast Guard on a 1-10 scale before and after the talk, and there was a 149% increase in their ratings following the talk.

As part of my internship at Greenbelt Elementary School, I planned and presented a talk on growth mindset. Growth mindset is a concept that is heavily endorsed by the school and has been found to be associated with higher grades, more persistence, and greater enjoyment of learning. The purpose of this night was to further educate parents about the topic and provide them with an opportunity to consider how to share this idea with their students. This event featured four guest speakers who represented possible paths after high school. Guests included a college student, a community college representative, a four-star general, and a member of the Peace Corps. I created the schedule for the event, directed speakers to the different classrooms, and facilitated a Q&A discussion for grades 3 - 5.

Career Day provided students in all grades the opportunity to be introduced to new career paths. I conducted outreach, created the schedule, and aided in day-of execution of the event. Guests included dentists, bakers, a lawyer, and an aspiring bioengineer.
