ELEMENTARY

Lessons for students in 1st through 5th grade. Lessons that I have created for this level include Accepting Differences, Bullying, Friendship, Personal Body Safety, Responsibility, Sportsmanship, and Stress

LESSONS

COPING SKILLS

1st Grade

Taught to help students learn how to manage their emotions, this lesson defines "coping skills" as safe and healthy actions that help us to feel better. As a class, students learn about deep breathing, taking a break, stretching and drawing and practice the skills together.

HOW TO APOLOGIZE

2nd Grade

A lesson teaching an important social skill, 2nd grade students learn the difference between a good and bad apology, the importance of apologizing, and the four steps for making a strong apology.

ADVOCACY

3rd Grade

In this lesson, 3rd grade students learned what it means to advocate for oneself, other people, and to fix big problems. Using the book "Say Something" by Peter H. Reynolds, students discuss different ways they can use their voice. This lesson sets the foundation for future social justice and action-oriented lessons by empowering them to say something.

CONFLICT DE-ESCALATION

4th Grade

An interactive lesson, students learn what it means to escalate a conflict or "add fuel to the fire." Students discuss ways to reduce conflicts. They learn the importance of de-escalating conflicts early via an application activity using a Donald Duck video. Throughout the lesson, it is emphasized that individuals have the power to stop conflict regardless of whether they started it.

CONSENT (BODY SAFETY)

5th Grade

The final lesson in the yearly body safety lessons, students review the definition of consent ("to ask permission") and discuss age-appropriate application situations using examples from movies and television.
